Bulk Energy Storage Technology

“Energy Storage System for exhausted Subsea Oil and Gas Reservoirs” International Application No. PCT/AU2019/050839

This technology involves the adaptation of an existing depleted off-shore gas or oil reservoir to store energy using air and sea water with no moving parts. It allows for entire energy systems to transition towards becoming 100% Renewable. A bulk energy storage system that over time will eliminate the need or use of coal fired base load generation.

Current energy storage technology is limited by finite capacity. Battery technology is expensive. Increasing penetrations of intermittent renewables, such as wind and solar power, on the world's power grids will require the deployment of growing amounts of energy storage to balance out the momentary, daily, and seasonal power fluctuations of these resources.

We have developed an energy storage technology that compares favourably with current energy storage technology (that is, current battery technology and pumped hydro);
  • Order of magnitudes greater in energy stored (MWh's) and capacity (MW's)
  • Significantly greater capacity means it can supply base load power and replace current fossil fuel generation systems
  • Provides inertia and hence contributes toward system reliability and energy security
  • 100% capable utilising current technology
  • Lower environmental impact compared to pumped hydro (no impact on fresh water systems and habitat and zero waste)
  • Long asset life 1000+ years
  • Intrinsically Safe
  • By-product is distilled water
The bulk energy storage technology has the potential to redefine the way energy systems operate, capable of supplying base load power meaning that a power system can be operated using 100% renewable energy.

It provides a practical and achievable pathway towards meeting global emissions targets and providing low cost renewable power around the world. This is the most important step towards preventing the potential impacts of climate change on our future, helping the world transition to affordable accessible renewable power.

The transition of the worlds stationary energy production (electricity generation) from fossil fuels to renewables with this technology will require significant investment, time and effort.

We are seeking investment and global associations to achieve this vision. The benefits are clear.
